I have also proposed a replacement or augmentation to AutoKEY which can use 
a PKCS11/12 type CSP or a CDSA type CSP.

We also have a stored-key system which we are playing with actually stores 
the keys in MySQL and uses a S/Key type client interface to make one-time 
keys possible. This makes the capability of the server several hundred 
million keys or more...
